about

Ben At Work’s “Top Of The Hill” is all about the moment before and after pushing a skateboard down the steepest street, diving off the high board or just worrying about risk, but charging ahead anyway and picking up steam. Fittingly this is the explosive return of Ben At Work, a project that in an early form was on pause whilst Ben was playing in the band Passerine, but now back with this first independent release. The track was initially made as part of a “beat cypher”, where artists challenge each other to quickly finish tracks using restrictions like specific samples. In completing these cyphers Ben began making his first solo work in years, inspired by the new rapid creative process. Top Of The Hill reflects this frenetic energy, opening with a pensive mood but soon the chorus explodes in a sugar rush like mix of synthesizer sounds. Oscillating between these moods, the track is carried by the driving beats, twinkling e-pianos and squelching synths. It’s a song that hopes to celebrate the creative process itself, where timid first steps turn into a pounding sprint (and this particular track was written entirely within one day).
